5 Truths on the Alyn Breed Situation
Breed has been suspended indefinitely following an off campus incident
It’s been quite the 30 days in Friartown. Similar to the Ed Cooley situation, you can take the below as you wish, but these are the facts.
Friartown woke up to some disturbing news on Saturday, a player on the Providence Basketball team was the subject of a police investigation after brandishing a gun at an off campus apartment on Friday evening. After a long day of way too many Twitter refreshes, Steve Maurano, Providence’s Director of Public Affairs, released the following statement:
“The College has been informed that one of our student-athletes has been detained by the Providence Police (PPD) as a result of a domestic incident that occurred off-campus early this morning. The Providence Police Department is investigating the matter, and we have no further details at this time. The College is cooperating fully with PPD in this investigation. All questions as to the legal status of the student-athlete should be directed to PPD.”
Not long after, news broke that the Providence player that had been detained was rising Senior guard Alyn Breed. Here is what we know:
Alyn Breed has been charged with several firearm offenses in addition to 4 non-firearm related charges.
Breaking: PC’s Alyn Breed has been charged with numerous firearm offenses per Providence Police. Below is a full list of charges following a domestic dispute from early this morning @NBC10 @PCFriarsmbbI have no idea what the firearm charges are. The fact that the College used the term ‘numerous’ would lead you to believe that there was more than 1 or 2 charges. The 4 non firearm charges are as follows (you can look them up here if you’re that interested):
11-8-2; Unlawful Breaking and Entering of a Dwelling House
11-39-1; Penalty for Robbery
11-44-1; Vandalism - Obstruction of lawful pursuits
31-9-1; Driving without Consent of Owner or Lessee
Alyn Breed is innocent until proven guilty.
Just like every other person who is charged in the United States of America. Obviously, we all know this, but this is a pretty sensitive issue so just wanted to get that out there before someone jumps me in the comments. Onward we go.
Breed has been suspended from all basketball related activities as of April 1, 9:00-ish.
The following statement was released by Athletic Director Steve Napolillo and Head Coach Kim English on Saturday night.
Breed has suspended indefinitely. Obviously, Providence College is going to handle this situation with extremely carefully, and there is no timetable for any decision beyond the initial suspension. The statements that have been released by Providence College were also released to every parent / guardian of a current PC student. This is a situation that is quite frankly much bigger than basketball.
On Saturday evening, Breed’s name was removed from the 2023-24 roster page that appears on Friars.com.
You can see the evidence for yourself here. I’m not a lawyer (duh) but the overwhelming likelihood is that Breed has played his last game in a Providence uniform. Let’s just say for the sake of argument he’s found not guilt on all charges (unlikely but just play it out with me), the reality of the situation at a school like Providence is that it would be extremely difficult (aka unrealistic) for Fr. Sicard, Steve Nap, and Kim English to allow Breed to take the floor next season.
Breed is currently being held at the ACI in Cranston, Rhode Island, and is scheduled to appear in District Court Monday morning.
This was first reported by Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times.
Update: Alyn Breed is being held at the ACI. Scheduled to appear in District Court on Monday morning:Facing firearm charges, Alyn Breed suspended from PC men's basketball program #pcbb https://t.co/n4AAYnouZ9Brendan McGair @BWMcGair03It appears that we may know more about Breed’s situation on Monday but if I had to venture a guess, this is a situation that will play itself out in the courts and may not be resolved for a few months.
Alyn Breed is a 21-year-old kid who just made the mistake of a lifetime.
Apologies, I threw a 6th fact in here to get up on my soapbox for a bit. I hope Alyn Breed finds peace. I hope the victim in this incident finds peace. I’ve met Breed once or twice and thought he was a good kid (although who isn’t a ‘good kid’ when you meet them in passing after they’ve just played in a basketball game). I liked him, and hope this mistake doesn’t define his life. I hope this incident doesn’t haunt the victims life either. No matter what your opinions of this situation are, it is a terrible series of events for everyone involved.
