We all knew it was coming, but perhaps against our better judgment decided to hold out hope until the last minute. Hope that Devin Carter would perhaps return to Providence for one more reason to reunite with Bryce Hopkins and lead Providence to the NCAA Tournament. Perhaps with the advances in NIL and endorsement opportunities Carter could have earned a decent proportion of what an NBA rookie would make. We’ll never know. Carter announced this morning that he’ll be forgoing his senior year of eligibility and declaring for the NBA draft, sharing the below message on his social media channels.
Let me be crystal clear, this is without a doubt the best move for Devin Carter. He saw up close the risk that is associated with coming back to college when Bryce Hopkins went down for the season with a torn ACL. Honestly, it was never really a question that Carter would leave for the NBA once he solidified himself as a first round prospect. The guaranteed money and length of contract that comes with being a first round pick cannot be matched. Every kid dreams about hearing their name called in the NBA draft. Carter deserves this and so much more.

As for the Friars, I think this is a net positive for the long term future of the Program. The one area where Providence is sorely lacking is representation in the NBA. How long can we ask Kris Dunn to hold the torch while hoping the Justin Minaya can find his way as a regular in an NBA rotation? Recruit great players, develop them, send them to the league, recruit more great players. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy, and Devin Carter is the first step in making it a reality.
