As the May 1st deadline to enter the transfer portal quickly approaches, the Providence Friars still have two scholarship spots at their disposal. For the terms of the exercise lets assume that class of 2025 Top 40 commit Oswin Erhunmwunse will end up reclassifying into the class of 2024 once the spring AAU season ends. Oswin’s decision has been the topic of much discussion in Friartown since he committed earlier this year, and it appears that his reclassification is more likely to happen than not at this point. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there, but that impending reclassification would leave Kim English with just 1 scholarship left to offer for the upcoming season.

If the head coach, and 99% of the fanbase, have their way, that final scholarship will be taken up by Milwaukee junior transfer, BJ Freeman. You may remember Freeman from earlier this year, when he exploded for 33 points (10-26 FG, 2-6 3PT, 11-11 FT) and 10 rebounds against Providence back in November.

Kim English was effusive in his praise of Freeman after that outing, saying “He was very poised. He took his time out there. He plays like [16 year NBA veteran and Baltimore native] Sam Cassell. He plays like a veteran… he knows exactly what he wants and how to get it.” It’s not hard to see why English would be enamored with Freeman’s game, he excels at the most difficult aspect of basketball - putting the ball in the hoop. Freeman is a pure scorer, and with enough size to hold his own in the Big East at 6’6, it’s no wonder one of Providence’s main competitors for Freeman’s services is Sean Miller and the Xavier Musketeers.
